X product chief hints at crypto launch, users pitch features

On April 14, X product chief Nikita Bier posted on the platform that “crypto has had a rough year” and added, “Maybe we should launch something to fix it.” The brief post drew rapid responses from users in X’s crypto community offering specific feature ideas.

Responders suggested native Bitcoin support, payments in USDC stablecoin for creators, integrated wallets, the ability to trade directly from the timeline, on-chain reputation tied to X accounts, copy trading and live profit-and-loss displays. One user summarized several ideas in a single thread, listing wallet integration, timeline trading, payments and creator revenue in stablecoins among potential components.

X announced Smart Cashtags on February 14, a feature intended to let people buy and sell stocks and cryptocurrencies directly from posts by building on X’s existing cashtag indexing system. Smart Cashtags is described as a way to transact from the timeline without leaving the app.

There has also been public discussion about adding token and wallet functions to X Money, the company’s payments effort. Observers and users have speculated that X Money could include a hybrid fiat and crypto wallet, tipping and subscription payments, and yield-bearing balances, but X has not confirmed specific crypto capabilities for the service.

In March, X named Benji Taylor design lead. Taylor previously served as chief product officer at Aave Labs and as lead designer on the Coinbase Base network. Taylor’s background includes work on blockchain products and decentralized finance.

X has not published product timelines or confirmed which, if any, community suggestions will be adopted. Company representatives have not announced a launch plan tied to Bier’s post. Users and observers will watch for official updates as Smart Cashtags rolls out and as X continues development of X Money and its product team under the new design lead.
