Wall Street Sells Bitcoin as Long-Term Holders Accumulate
Institutional investors have reduced Bitcoin exposure in recent weeks while long-term holders move coins off exchanges and increase on-chain balances.
Institutional investors have cut Bitcoin positions in recent weeks, while long-term holders have added to balances, creating a split between institutional selling and on-chain accumulation.
Institutional selling occurred through exchange-traded products, over-the-counter desks and custodial transfers. Several large market participants trimmed allocations as part of portfolio rebalancing and risk management, and transactions tended to run on regulated venues and principal desks able to handle large block trades.
Traders and custody providers reported notable outflows from Bitcoin-focused ETFs and institutional accounts on days of higher market volatility. Block trades and large sell orders dominated order books at times, reducing short-term liquidity on spot markets and prompting market makers to widen spreads and adjust hedges.
On-chain indicators show increased activity from addresses that have not moved coins for months. Market analysts commonly classify long-term holders as addresses inactive for about 155 days or more; those addresses have grown their balances by transferring coins from exchange wallets into private or cold storage.
Spot exchange reserves have declined as coins moved into longer-term custody, reducing the immediate supply available for trading. Some wallets appear to have accumulated during recent price pullbacks while institutional selling took place.
Institutions cited portfolio diversification reviews, liquidity needs and regulatory considerations when reducing positions. Long-term holders cited belief in Bitcoin’s long-term value and a preference to buy during higher volatility.
Analysts monitoring on-chain flows and custody reports noted that interactions between institutional outflows and accumulation by inactive addresses will affect near-term market liquidity and the available float for trading.
