Three factors behind IEM Cologne Major’s record audience

IEM Cologne Major 2026 reached record viewership after Stage 3 used best-of-three matches. ESL’s platform-specific broadcasts and 500+ co-streams generated nearly half of total watch time.

Stage 3 at IEM Cologne Major 2026 used best-of-three matches for every game, while ESL ran platform-specific broadcasts and more than 500 independent co-streams. The event set new peaks for concurrent and cumulative viewership.

The tournament took place in Cologne and was organized by ESL as part of the Intel Extreme Masters circuit. Organizers extended the best-of-three format to all Stage 3 matches, increasing total airtime compared with formats that limit longer series to elimination rounds.

ESL produced multiple feeds adapted for different platforms. Observing and replay choices, selective use of X-ray during clutch moments, arena lighting, opening ceremonies and a live orchestra were part of the main production. The official feed on YouTube peaked at more than 407,000 concurrent viewers, while the Twitch feed reached over 341,000 peak viewers. ESL also prepared a separate vertical feed for TikTok that matched mobile viewing behavior and set a new Counter-Strike record on that platform, about 77% higher than the previous benchmark.

Distribution expanded beyond official channels. Cologne was available on more than 500 streams, compared with just over 100 channels at the 2019 Katowice Major. Community casters made up roughly 91% of those independent streams. Independent broadcasts collectively accounted for close to half of the tournament’s total watch time and nearly half of the peak audience. The largest non-official stream surpassed 315,000 concurrent viewers.

Competition outcomes produced sustained interest across the longer match format. Team Falcons won the final, giving Nikola “NiKo” Kovač his first Major title and featuring an MVP performance from Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov. Finn “karrigan” Andersen won his second Major trophy after joining Falcons. FURIA reached its first Major final led by Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo. Other notable runs included 9z producing a new Spanish-language viewership peak and meeting FURIA in an all–South American quarterfinal, Aurora’s Turkish lineup reaching the semifinals and contributing to a Turkish-language peak, and BIG overturning a 12:0 deficit to win a deciding map 16:12 against NRG in the opening stage.

Longer series increased potential viewing time per match. Platform-specific feeds provided formats adapted to different device habits, and creator-led co-streams offered local-language coverage and access to established communities. Those elements coincided with the recorded viewership peaks and totals for IEM Cologne Major 2026.
