Plannatech cleared to operate Prime Sports in Ohio

Ohio Casino Control Commission approved Plannatech’s license to run Prime Sports after its acquisition of the Chapter 11 sportsbook; Kentucky and New Jersey had already approved.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission granted Plannatech a mobile sports betting license at a meeting in Columbus on Wednesday, authorizing the company to operate Prime Sports in Ohio after buying the sportsbook during its Chapter 11 reorganization. Regulators in Kentucky and New Jersey had previously approved Plannatech’s application.

The license allows Prime to resume taking wagers in Ohio after a temporary pause while the regulator completed its review. Plannatech had served as Prime’s platform provider and operates Betcris in Arizona.

Prime continued to accept bets in New Jersey and Kentucky during the review but paused Ohio wagering last month. Plannatech’s chief executive, Adam Bjorn, posted on X that only a small number of Ohio customers withdrew funds during the interruption and that many accounts still hold balances.

Bjorn told the commission he had hoped to secure all approvals in time for the FIFA World Cup but described the Ohio approval as well timed with the start of the American football season. He outlined a career focused on shifting customers from unregulated operators into regulated markets and said regulation should channel customers into safe, transparent wagering.

Commissioner Scott Borgemenke commented that regulated operators do not always share the same financial incentives as unregulated firms and commended Prime for protecting both the company and its customers. Borgemenke added, “You’re not just a corporate entity coming in, trying to strip the top off the player.”

Prime filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in November, reporting estimated assets between $1 million and $10 million and estimated liabilities between $50 million and $100 million. The court-approved reorganization plan, signed May 21, provided for Plannatech to take over operations.

Prime will mark its third anniversary in Ohio this September. The sportsbook’s handle has grown from about $4.5 million in wagers in December 2023 to more than $22 million in December 2025, ranking ninth among Ohio’s 13 licensed operators. The December 2025 total was similar to Hard Rock Bet and reduced the gap with Caesars and theScore.

Bjorn said the company does not intend to challenge market leaders such as FanDuel or DraftKings. He described Prime as a straightforward option focused on customer service, saying the operator uses a community-based structure that gives customers direct access to senior staff and aims to limit long waits on live chat.
