IEM Cologne Stage 1 Viewers Down 5%; BIG Peaks Near 500K
Stage 1 viewership slipped about 5% as BIG recovered from a 12–0 deficit to beat NRG 2–1 on the decider, a match that peaked near 500,000 viewers.
BIG beat NRG 2–1 to claim the final Stage 2 spot at the IEM Cologne Major 2026 after a comeback from a 12–0 deficit on the deciding map. The match was the most-watched fixture of Stage 1 and reached a peak audience of nearly 500,000 viewers. Stage 1 ran June 2–? at the ESL studio in Germany as the opening phase of the tournament.
Overall viewership for Stage 1 declined compared with the opening phase of the previous Major. Metrics posted drops ranging from about 5% to almost 12% depending on the measure used. Organizers and analysts point to the tournament field composition: several top-ranked teams joined only in Stage 2, so Stage 1 did not include teams such as FaZe Clan, Fnatic and Ninjas in Pyjamas, which had increased baseline viewership at the prior Major.
BIG’s match against NRG finished as the stage highlight, drawing the largest single-match audience after final data updates. The next-highest audience was for B8 versus M80, which fell just short of 400,000 peak viewers by roughly 1,300.
Competition results in Stage 1 included B8 Esports and BB Team posting perfect 3–0 records to advance. Team Liquid lost to FlyQuest and failed to progress, while Heroic exited early. Gaimin Gladiators and SINNERS Esports were the first teams eliminated after 0–3 records. Teams knocked out in Stage 1 received $5,000 each in prize money.
Stage 2 will feature 16 teams: the top eight from Stage 1 plus eight seeded teams that qualified directly via the VRS rankings. The stage uses a five-round Swiss format with opening matches played as Best-of-1 and elimination and qualification matches as Best-of-3. Opening match pairs and times include Astralis versus GamerLegion and 9z Team versus FlyQuest at 12:30 CET; FUT Esports versus B8 and paiN Gaming versus TyLoo at 13:30 CET; G2 Esports versus M80 and Monte versus BIG at 14:30 CET; and Legacy versus MIBR and Team Spirit versus BB Team at 15:30 CET.
Stage 1 and Stage 2 matches are being held at the ESL studio, Stage 3 will move to the Palladium concert hall, and the playoffs are scheduled for the LANXESS Arena. The full event runs June 2–21 in Germany. Fans can watch Stage 2 on ESL’s official streaming channels across multiple platforms.
