Betting Blocked on National Mall During 2027 NFL Draft
Mobile sportsbooks and in-person wagering will be banned on the National Mall for the 2027 NFL Draft, scheduled April 29–May 1, because federal law bars gambling on federal land.
The NFL Draft will be held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from April 29 to May 1, 2027. The league placed the Draft Theater on the Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol, which puts the main event site on federal land where gambling is prohibited.
Federal law bars wagering on federal enclaves, a designation that includes large public areas such as the Mall and many smaller parcels of land across the District. About 29% of D.C. is federal land, and those boundaries extend into strips and small plots between streets. That layout prevents mobile sportsbooks and in-person betting on much of the Draft footprint.
Licensed mobile sportsbooks operate in Washington, D.C., but they must block wagers on federal land and within two-block exclusivity zones around sports arenas. Operators active in the city include FanDuel (the D.C. Lottery’s official sportsbook partner), BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, theScoreBet and Fanatics. In practice, geo-fencing systems used to verify a bettor’s legal location can have trouble where federal and non-federal zones are tightly interwoven, producing slow or failed verification for users near the Mall.
A city map of entertainment sports gambling restriction zones shows narrow pockets outside federal property on some streets, including sections of Constitution and Independence Avenues, where mobile betting could technically be allowed. The margins are small, and providers must rely on precise location tools to ensure compliance.
Maryland allows draft betting; Virginia does not permit it in any form. Local residents in the District, Maryland and Virginia are generally familiar with the restrictions. Visitors who attempt to place wagers on the Mall may encounter legal and technical limits and could be unable to complete bets while on federal property.
Only a few recent draft hosts had legal betting in their states at the time they hosted: Las Vegas in 2022 and Detroit in 2024. The 2026 draft in Pittsburgh drew a record attendance of more than 805,000 over three days.
Some attendees may choose to place bets from nearby non-federal property such as bars, hotels or private residences outside the Mall boundaries. Others may use prediction markets or place wagers before arriving on the Mall. Operators and verification providers will apply geolocation controls to serve customers while complying with federal and local rules.
A league release quoted Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of club business, international and global events: “The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, DC, in 2027. Our nation’s capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”
