Alberta’s regulated online gambling logs 3.2M geolocation checks
In Alberta’s first week after the July 13 launch, GeoComply registered 3.2 million geolocation checks and more than 100,000 sign-ups on platforms using its technology.
Alberta opened its regulated online gambling market on July 13. GeoComply reported more than 3.2 million geolocation checks and over 100,000 user sign-ups across the platforms that use its technology in the first week.
Fourteen of the province’s 22 operators that launched on day one were enabled by GeoComply. The company said its data covers about 64% of those initial sites and that the customer list may expand as more operators go live or broaden offerings.
Activity peaked during the FIFA World Cup final on July 19, when GeoComply logged more than 53,000 geolocation checks tied to the Spain vs. Argentina match. Anna Sainsbury, GeoComply co-founder and chair, described the World Cup as “close to home” for the company and said Albertans were keen to use regulated betting options.
Two Entain brands, Sports Interaction and PartyCasino, joined the Alberta market during the launch week. BetMGM is also listed among GeoComply’s clients.
GeoComply reported no downtime during the launch window. The company said 99.48% of logins and wagers passed its geolocation screening. The remaining 0.52% largely reflected attempts at location masking, which GeoComply characterized as efforts to disguise location or use tools to appear inside Alberta. The company noted that even a small failure rate represented thousands of blocked transactions.
The company attributed the high pass rate to its Adaptive Verification technology. GeoComply described the system as risk-based: most legitimate users are verified in the background using multiple signals, while sessions that show signs of spoofing or other anomalies are subject to stepped-up checks. The launch provided the company with a first live test of its browser-based verification in a regulated market.
Observers contrasted Alberta’s launch with Ontario’s earlier rollout. Alberta has a population near five million, compared with roughly 16 million in Ontario, and it launched in mid-summer when professional sports schedules are lighter. GeoComply noted Ontario’s rollout coincided with stronger sporting events that boosted early engagement.
GeoComply said it will continue to monitor the market and publish further data as the regulated market matures. Industry observers described the opening week as an initial test of access controls and operator readiness in Alberta’s regulated online gambling market.
