TikTok Live Chat Outpaces YouTube in MPL Engagement
Esports Charts found TikTok Live’s weighted chat engagement across Southeast Asian MPL broadcasts was 108% higher than YouTube’s, with the largest gap in the Philippines and widest during pauses.
An analysis by Esports Charts compared chat activity on TikTok Live and YouTube across a sample of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) broadcasts in Southeast Asia. The study focused on official streams to match events and broadcast moments on both platforms.
The report measured engagement as chat messages relative to average audience size, a metric labeled weighted chat engagement. Across the sample, TikTok Live’s weighted chat engagement rate was 108% higher than YouTube’s. The pattern appeared in every market included in the analysis, with the largest gap recorded for MPL Philippines.
On the MPL Indonesia Season 17 final day, TikTok’s weighted chat engagement was 24% higher than YouTube’s during both the waiting-for-match phase and live match segments. During pauses in play, the gap widened to 54%.
Because the engagement rate divides chat activity by average audience size, a higher rate indicates more messages per viewer rather than larger overall viewer counts. The analysts used that measure to compare how active viewers were at specific points in a broadcast.
The report found the strongest differences in chat activity during broadcast downtime, including breaks between matches and pauses in play, rather than during live gameplay.
The MPL is a regional professional league for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Broadcasters stream matches on multiple platforms, including YouTube and TikTok, to reach different audience segments. The analysis presents chat metrics as a separate measure from view counts and peak concurrent viewers, showing when viewers post messages and which broadcast segments generate more comments.
