OpenAI launches Deployment Company, acquires Tomoro
OpenAI formed a majority-owned OpenAI Deployment Company, acquired Tomoro and secured over $4 billion to embed engineers who will integrate its models into customer systems.
On Sunday, OpenAI announced it has formed the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new majority-owned subsidiary intended to place Forward Deployed Engineers inside customer organizations to integrate and operationalize OpenAI models. The announcement included an agreement to acquire consulting firm Tomoro and more than $4 billion in committed capital to fund the unit’s operations.
The deployment company will embed engineers inside businesses to diagnose high-value use cases, select priority workflows and design, build, test and deploy production systems that link OpenAI models to clients’ data, controls and processes. Initial engagements begin with a diagnostic phase to identify a small number of workflows for rapid development and deployment.
OpenAI agreed to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting firm formed in 2023 in partnership with OpenAI. The deal would bring roughly 150 Tomoro engineers and deployment experts into the subsidiary once regulators approve the transaction. Tomoro’s client list includes Tesco, Virgin Atlantic, Mattel, Red Bull and Supercell.
The deployment company has secured more than $4 billion in capital committed by OpenAI and a consortium of 19 investment firms, consulting firms and system integrators. TPG is leading the investor group, with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield as co-lead founding partners. Other financial backers include Goldman Sachs, SoftBank Corp., Warburg Pincus, B Capital, BBVA, Emergence Capital and WCAS. Consulting firms Bain & Company, Capgemini and McKinsey & Company are among the investment partners. The funds will be used to scale operations and acquire additional firms that can speed enterprise AI adoption.
OpenAI reported that more than one million businesses use its products and APIs. In March 2026 the company disclosed about $2 billion in monthly revenue, roughly 900 million weekly active users and a valuation of $852 billion following a large funding round. OpenAI has committed to major infrastructure contracts and partnerships, including a potential multibillion-dollar cloud deal, a $22.4 billion agreement with CoreWeave and participation in a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle.
The deployment unit will remain majority owned and controlled by OpenAI and will be run by Forward Deployed Engineers aiming to help customers build systems that evolve as new models are released. Regulatory approval is required before the Tomoro acquisition closes and the engineers join the new company.
