BitMEX Identifies Amy Winehouse as Satoshi Nakamoto

BitMEX research points to a UK newspaper headline in Bitcoin’s genesis block and name links to Adam Back to argue late singer Amy Winehouse created Bitcoin.

BitMEX Research published a report identifying late British singer Amy Jade Winehouse as the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The firm bases its argument on a British newspaper headline embedded in Bitcoin’s genesis block and name-based links to early cryptographer Adam Back.

The report highlights the 2009 newspaper line included in the network’s first block, which mentions a chancellor and a bank bailout. BitMEX says the presence of a UK-specific headline suggests a British origin for Bitcoin’s author and notes that Winehouse was a British national who lived in London.

BitMEX also points to timing around communications and Winehouse’s death. The firm notes the last known on-chain message attributed to Satoshi is dated April 26, 2011, roughly three months before Winehouse died on July 23, 2011. The report suggests the gap in activity could account for why coins mined in 2009 remain untouched. The report reproduces a Satoshi remark about publicity: “I wish you wouldn’t keep talking about me as a mysterious, shadowy figure; the press just turns it into a pirate-currency angle.”

The analysis links Winehouse to Adam Back through a chain of name associations. BitMEX cites Winehouse’s 2006 album titled Back to Black and an instance in magazine coverage that misprinted Back’s surname as “Black.” The report also notes Satoshi’s early references to Adam Back’s Hashcash proof-of-work work and presents the overlap of names and references as part of its case.

The research includes biographical details and personal recollections. A longtime friend is quoted describing Winehouse as “highly intelligent.” The report references Winehouse’s documented illegal drug use and suggests BitMEX interprets those facts as consistent with a libertarian outlook that, the firm says, would align with early Bitcoin rhetoric.

The claim has drawn skepticism within the cryptocurrency community, where debate over Satoshi’s identity has continued for years. BitMEX acknowledges prior satirical theories and says its latest piece compiles on-chain evidence, name associations and biographical details to support its argument.

Background: Amy Winehouse was born Sept. 14, 1983, and died July 23, 2011. Adam Back is a British cryptographer credited with developing Hashcash, an early proof-of-work system cited in Bitcoin discussions. Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity remains unconfirmed since the Bitcoin white paper and the network’s first block were published.
