AWS lets AI agents pay with USDC via Coinbase, Stripe

AWS previewed AgentCore Payments, letting AI agents make USDC micropayments through Coinbase or Stripe Privy wallets using the x402 protocol, settling on Base and Solana.

Amazon Web Services on Wednesday launched a preview of AgentCore Payments, a feature that lets AI agents make USDC stablecoin micropayments through Coinbase or Stripe Privy wallets. Transactions settle on Base and Solana and run inside the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore framework.

When an agent requests paid content and receives an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response, the x402 protocol handles the payment flow. The system authenticates the linked wallet, executes the stablecoin transfer, attaches proof of payment and returns the requested content without interrupting the agent’s execution loop.

Developers connect agents to funded Coinbase or Stripe Privy wallets and set per-session spending limits. End users must explicitly authorize any wallet access and can fund wallets with USDC or fiat via debit card. Spending caps apply per session rather than across all sessions.

Coinbase notes the offering includes sanctions screening and illicit finance risk controls through its CDP Facilitator. AgentCore Gateway can route agents to thousands of x402-enabled services using an integrated Coinbase MCP server; Coinbase reported the x402 protocol has processed more than 169 million payments across roughly 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers.

Brian Foster, Head of Infrastructure Growth at Coinbase, said companies have asked for agents that can transact while meeting legal and compliance requirements, and called the preview a way for developers to grant agents “financial autonomy in a comprehensive managed solution.” Mit Majithia, executive vice president at Warner Bros. Discovery, described AgentCore Payments as “a promising direction” for agent-driven commerce around premium content.

AWS named Cox Automotive, Thomson Reuters and the PGA TOUR as existing users of AgentCore for agent workflows that do not yet include payments. The x402 protocol is governed by the x402 Foundation, which counts AWS and Coinbase among its members. AWS said it plans to add support for other payment protocols as they emerge.

Industry developers favor stablecoin rails for machine payments because many agent transactions are very small, often fractions of a cent, which makes traditional card networks impractical. Other projects are developing alternative rails and HTTP-native machine payment standards and exploring virtual card solutions for bots.

AgentCore Payments is presented as a managed package covering wallet authentication, transaction execution, spending governance and observability to enable automated micropayments for AI-driven workflows.
