Anthropic Secures 220,000+ Nvidia GPUs at SpaceX Site

Anthropic will use all computing capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, securing access to more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs and over 300 megawatts of power. The agreement was announced May 6 and was revealed by Anthropic Chief Product Officer Ami Vora at the company’s developer conference in San Francisco. The company expects the capacity online within about a month.

Anthropic confirmed the additional capacity will increase its inference and training bandwidth. The company said it will double five-hour rate limits on Claude Code for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise subscribers, lift peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts and raise API rate limits for Claude Opus models.

The Colossus 1 deal adds to other infrastructure commitments Anthropic listed in its announcement, including up to 5 gigawatts with Amazon, with nearly 1 GW of new capacity expected by the end of 2026; a 5 GW agreement with Google and Broadcom beginning in 2027; a strategic partnership with Microsoft and Nvidia tied to roughly $30 billion of Azure capacity; and a $50 billion infrastructure investment with Fluidstack.

Anthropic said it plans to expand inference capacity in Asia and Europe through its Amazon collaboration to serve enterprise customers in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare and government that require in-region infrastructure for compliance. The company added it is intentional about where it adds capacity, choosing partners and jurisdictions with legal frameworks and supply chains that support large-scale investment.

SpaceX acquired a large GPU estate earlier this year and is selling access to Colossus hardware to generate revenue from equipment that would otherwise be idle between its own training runs. Elon Musk wrote on X that after meeting with senior Anthropic staff he was impressed: “Everyone I met was highly competent and cared a great deal about doing the right thing. No one set off my evil detector.”

Local residents near the Memphis data centers have raised complaints about pollution from gas turbines that help power the sites. Anthropic acknowledged the energy footprint in its announcement and said it has committed to cover any consumer electricity price increases caused by its U.S. data centers. The company said it is exploring ways to extend that pledge internationally.

Anthropic’s announcement also included a brief line that the company has “expressed interest” in partnering with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity. No timeline, dollar figure or technical details were provided.

Anthropic said the Colossus 1 capacity is expected to be online within about a month. The company stated the additional GPUs and power will allow it to serve more users and larger enterprise customers while addressing near-term compute constraints.
